The Hastings boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams usually open the season in Rosemount at the Irish Invite, one of the largest competitions of their season. This year, head coach John DeWall decided to go in a different direction with his young teams. The Raiders went to St. Catherine’s College for a small meet hosted by Cretin-Derham Hall to provide a less intense and chaotic atmosphere for their young runners. The boys took first out of six teams with 35 team points, 18 ahead of Cretin-Derham Hall. The girls were runners-up — 15 points out of first in a field of four teams.
The Raiders boys’ had five runners finish fifth through ninth, led by senior Luke Harris, junior Nolan Myers and sophomores Tommy Siebenaler and Tyler Bushinski all with times of 14 minutes, 55 seconds. Junior Evan McGinnis placed ninth with a time of 15 minutes. Sophomore Xander Smith took 12th with a time of 15:59, right behind him in 13th was junior Liam Shelhamer in 16 minutes and junior Kyle Stoltz and senior Alex Keller placed 18th and 19th with times of 16:20 and 16:49, respectively.
Junior Tyler Johnson took 22nd with a time of 16:56, fellow junior Sam Rabaey finished 23rd in 16:59, freshman Max Albertson was 25th (17:02) and sophomore Nick Kohn placed 26th with a time of 17:05. Senior Milton Lindgren took 33rd with a time of 17:39, sophomore Brett Halverson finished 46th in 18:08 and sophomore Colton Dunkel placed 57th (18:52). Sophomore Jackson Ashenbrenner took 60th with a time of 18:59, fellow sophomore Craig Hartman finished 61st in 19:18 and sophomore Everett Swartz placed 65th (20:50). Freshman Noah Klippen took 68th with a time of 21 minutes.
The girls were led by junior Linnea Urban, who took fifth with a time of 18:10. Eighth grader Elise Atkins took seventh with a time of 18:22, right behind her in eighth was fellow eighth grader Eve Lawson in 18:34 and junior Brooke Erickson placed 13th (19:27). Seventh grader Carlee Kordosky took 14th with a time of 19:28, two seconds behind her in 15th was freshman Molly Caturia, eighth grader Skylar Little Soldier finished 16th with a time of 19:30 as well and sophomore Autumn Adricula placed 20th (20:01). Eighth grader Jordyn Doughty took 21st with a time of 20:02, sophomore Olivia Mattson finished 34th in 22:29 and eighth grader Hannah Hoff placed 35th (22:54). Freshman Lindsay Mathison took 40th with a time of 24:05.
The Raiders’ next meet is Thursday, Sept. 5, at home at St. Croix Regional Park at 4 p.m.
