The Hastings girls' golf team took a big step forward last Thursday and on Monday by advancing to the second day of the Section 1AAA golf meet, and finishing in sixth, at Cannon Golf Club in Cannon Falls. The Raiders were in sixth after Thursday's first round when they shot a 395, four strokes ahead of Rochester Century. They struggled a little bit on Monday, shooting a 408 for a two-day total of 803. Lakeville North won the Section 1AAA championship with a 667.
Eighth-grader Megan Brown continued her stellar play by leading the Raiders with a 193, which was good for a tie for 21st. She shot 47-52 in the first round and then improved, coming in with a 44-50 in the second round. Junior Hannah Hubbart was not far behind, tying for 25th with a 197 (52-44, 46-55) and fellow junior Sam Benson tied for 35th with a 205 (51-46, 52-56). Senior Shannon O'Connor and eighth-grader Lauren Skov finished back-to-back in 38th and 39th respectively. O'Connor shot a 50-53, 57-53 for a 213, while Skov went 53-58, 52-53 for a 216. Eighth-grader Lauren Hubbart came in with a 248 (58-63, 64-63).
Head coach Becky Hartung has often talked the last two seasons about how young her team is, but right now it's an advantage for the Raiders. O'Connor is the lone senior on the team this season and there are only three juniors-Benson, Hannah Hubbart and Madison Caroon. With several varsity contributors who are still in middle school. Even after next year the future is bright for Hastings as Megan Brown, Lauren Hubbart and Lauren Skov continue to develop.
