After four years of coaching the Somerset boys golf team, Todd Myers will now also coach the Somerset girls golf team.

Myers' hiring as the Spartan girls golf coach was approved by the Somerset Board of Education last week. He replaces Bill Powers, who came out of retirement to coach the Spartan girls last fall.

Myers has followed the Spartan girls team closely for several years. His daughter, Haley, is the top player on the team. She finished fourth in the Middle Border Conference individual standings last year. She's played at the WIAA State Championships twice, in 2018 when Somerset qualified as a team and in 2018 when she qualified as an individual. She shot a 182 score to tie for 13th in the 2018 Division 2 state tournament.

Coach Myers held a meeting with interested girls last week and said that 15 high school girls showed interest, along with two eighth graders. He said he thinks it will be better for both golf programs to have one coach handling both teams, making it less complicated in working with area golf courses and other management issues.

The Spartans were a young team last year, graduating two seniors. They had several girls step up and Myers wants to see the team continue to improve.

"It has been five years since the Spartans have been in the top four for team standings in the Middle Border Conference, which needs to change," he said.

Myers said he's coached several of the girls during his summer golf academy so he thinks it will be a smooth transition in changing coaches.
