Finding consistency can be challenging for freshmen athletes when they’re first exposed to varsity competition.
That hasn’t been the case for Prescott’s Ava Salay.
The Prescott freshman won her third Middle Border Conference medalist honors on Thursday, Sept. 5, before her first week of high school was completed.
Salay shot a low 40 at Bristol Ridge Golf Course on Thursday to earn her third first-place finish and edge out New Richmond’s Lanie Veenendal by one stroke. Her first-place finish came down to a 6-foot putt on the final hole of the day.
Prescott’s Alexis Fredericks and Liz Rohl also completed the nine-hole course in less than 50 strokes, but New Richmond bested the Cardinals by seven strokes to win its third first-place team finish.
Ellsworth’s Holly Carlson also finished in the 40s with a 45, which landed her in a three-way tie for sixth place with New Richmond’s Jessica Hagman and Sydney Nolan. After three MBC meets, Carlson is in fourth place in the individual conference standings with 22 points — just two points more than Prescott’s Fredericks.
Carlson was the only Ellsworth Panther to shoot under 50, and her team finished in fourth place with a total score of 211.
The Cardinals and Panthers will compete in five more meets before the MBC Conference Championship on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and the next to come will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at Pheasant Hills Golf Course.
