Nikki Olund's third goal of the game 3 minutes, 9 seconds into overtime ended a see-saw battle and lifted the fifth-ranked Raider girls' hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Superior Saturday, Dec. 8, in Superior.
Olund's game-winner came after the two teams played to a 3-3 tie by trading goals through the first two periods. Hudson goalie Alayna Kushiner made nine of her 16 saves in the third period to keep the game tied.
Superior struck first 7:15 into the game but it took just 20 seconds for Olund to answer with an unassisted goal at 7:35.
The Spartans took a 2-1 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the first period but Hudson came right back with Olund's second goal of the game at the 13:21 mark, assisted by Sydney Hendricks and Rose Giblin.
Superior took its third lead of the game at the 10:26 mark of the second period but once again Hudson came right back with Morgan Miller converting a pass from Taylor Wandschneider 40 seconds later to make it a 3-3 game.
Neither team scored in the third period despite Superior outshooting the Raiders, 9-2, to send the game to overtime, where Olund completed her hat trick 3:09 in with an assist from Hendricks to give the Raiders the win.
Hudson outshot Superior 30-19 in the game but came up empty on seven power play opportunities while the Spartans were 0-for-3.
Hudson, now 2-1, will host the ninth-ranked St. Croix Valley Fusion (River Falls/Baldwin-Woodville/St. Croix Central) in the Big Rivers Conference opener for both teams Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m. at Gornick Arena. The Fusion enter the game with a record of 2-2.
