The Farmington Tigers girls' hockey team once again sits atop Section 1AA as the playoffs start. Last year, they were the No. 1 seed in last year's section playoffs but fell in a high-scoring section championship game to Lakeville South.
This year, they are again the No. 1 seed over Lakeville North, which was the better team according to QRF. However, the Tigers went 5-0 against Section 1AA opponents during the regular season as opposed to Lakeville North's 3-2 record. The Tigers also swept the Panthers during the regular season with 4-2 and 3-0 victories.
Farmington finished the regular season with a 12-11-2 overall record and went 9-7-2 in the South Suburban Conference.
The Tigers struggled a bit down the final stretch of an up-and-down regular season and will hope they can gain some momentum in the early part of the Section 1AA playoffs. They were just 2-5-1 in their last eight games after winning six-of-seven dating back to the start of the Louis Schmitz Holiday Classic.
While Farmington may be a young team-they have just three seniors and four juniors-they are very talented and it cannot be denied they are tough as out of 25 games played, 13 were decided by one goal or ended in a tie. In fact, the Tigers played an astounding eight overtime games this season and had 3-3-2 record in them.
Farmington is led by freshmen Claire Enright with 43 points (22 goals and 21 assists) and Samantha Moehle with 30 points (20 goals and 10 assists), along with sophomore Carly Lancaster who has 22 points (eight goals and 14 assists). The Tigers have five players with more than 10 points and a total of 15 players with at least one varsity point. Sophomore goalie Ryleigh Furlong is in the top-30 in the state with 12 wins.
Looking ahead to the section playoffs, Farmington went undefeated in their five section games this season with wins over Lakeville North (twice), Lakeville South (twice) and Northfield. The Tigers will play No. 9-seeded Rochester John Marshall-who beat No. 8 Rochester Mayo 8-1 on Monday, Feb. 4, in a play-in game-on Wednesday, Feb. 6, in Farmington.
Mayo went 5-17-3 during the regular season and were 2-6-1 against section opponents (both wins coming against John Marshall). Should they win, they would then play the winner of No. 4 Northfield and No. 5 Lakeville South on Saturday, Feb. 9, most likely at Farmington.
The Section 1AA championship game is on Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Four Season Centre in Owatonna.
On the other side of the bracket in the first round is No. 3 Dodge County versus No. 6 Owatonna and No. 2 Lakeville North against No. 7 Rochester Century.
