Softball opens WIAC play with splits
The UW-River Falls softball team had to head to Platteville to open WIAC play over the weekend and came away with a pair of split doubleheaders against UW-Whitewater and UW-Platteville.
The Falcons topped Whitewater, 5-4, in their first game Friday, April 20, before losing the nightcap, 10-2. Saturday, April 21, the host Pioneers defeated UWRF 10-2 before the Falcons took the second game, 2-1.
Maddie Studnicka and Molly Kaspar led UWRF with two RBI each in Friday's win over the Warhawks while Hannah Stegeman picked up her seventh pitching victory of the season.
Payton Speckel went the distance for her eighth win of the season in Saturday's nightcap win over Platteville while Amber Galloway and Studnicka drove in a run apiece.
UWRF, now 17-7 overall, 2-2 in WIAC play, will visit UW-Oshkosh Wednesday, April 25, before hosting a doubleheader against UW-La Crosse Saturday, April 28.
Boys hoops camps at UWRF
The UWRF men's basketball program will host a series of camps for boys elementary and high school players this summer.
The Fundamental Youth Day Camp, designed to teach the basic fundamentals of basketball, will be held June 11-14. Session 1 is for players entering grades 3-4 in Fall, 2018 and will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, and Session 2, for players entering grades 5-6, will be from 1-4 p.m. Fee is $80.
The Skill Development and Competition Camp, designed for personalized instruction covering all phases of skill improvement for players entering grades 6-10, will be held June 19-21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The fee is $170 and lunch will be provided.
The Big Man Camp on June 15, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. is for players entering grades 9-12 and is designed for personalized instruction covering offensive and defensive concepts for effective play around the basket. The fee is $65.
The Point Guard camp is for players entering grades 7-12 and will be held June 22 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The camp is designed for personalized instruction covering offensive concepts for effective point guard play. The fee is $65.
All camps will be held in the Falcon center on the campus of UWRF and include an experienced coaching staff, Falcon players in attendance, a camp T-shirt and camper evaluation. Lunch for the SDC Day Camp and Big Man Camp will be served at the University Center.
