Woodbury 20, St. Croix Prep 3

This Tuesday was a night that the Woodbury girls lacrosse team had circled on their calendars for quite a long time.

It was senior night for the Royals and the girls knew this was a game they wanted to win for not only the seniors, but for their future as a program.

"This has been a fun season and a great time getting to know some of the new players on the team," said senior captain Hallie Oberg. "This team has grown this season and it'll be fun seeing the program grow next season."

From the moment of the first faceoff, Woodbury had everything in control. Head coach Julie Fleming said the girls made smart plays around the goal to find the open player and score.

She also added that the defense had a strong game as they only allowed three goals to be scored. The Royals were able to get their sticks on the opponents and allow balls to drop to create turnovers.

Fleming was proud of how the seniors stepped up not only in this game, but the entire season to show the younger girls how to play Woodbury lacrosse.

"These seniors have been great role models for these younger players and I couldn't be more proud of them," Fleming said. "We have a lot of freshmen on the team this year and these seniors have helped them develop into strong players for the future."

Even though Woodbury's record shows more losses than wins this season, senior captain Isabel Sanchez has seen the growth at practice and different team events throughout the season.

"These girls have been working very hard and continue to get better at every practice and game," Sanchez said. "It'll be fun to see them in the future once our senior year ends this season."

Woodbury will head on the road to Cretin-Derham Hall on Thursday, May 16 at 7 p.m. for an important conference game.
