Washington County plans to conduct controlled burns between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Lake Elmo Park Reserve May 15-28.
Controlled burns help keep forests and grasslands healthy, by encouraging the regrowth of fire-dependent native plants and reducing undesirable brush in forests. Many native plant communities in Washington County have plants, habitats and wildlife that need regular fire or grazing disturbance.
All burns are planned with the assistance of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Forestry Division and local fire departments. Controlled burns will occur only when weather conditions permit a safe and effective burn. Trained personnel with firefighting equipment are on-site until the fire is extinguished.
