River Falls boys’ soccer coach Marcos Rodriguez said it was hard to argue with the Wildcat’s No. 4 seed for the upcoming WIAA playoffs.

The Cat’s overall record of 7-7-2, and 4-4 1 in the Division 1 dominated Big Rivers Conference, was good enough to earn them a home game against No. 5 La Crosse Central (9-4-2) for the first round of the Division 2 regional playoffs Tuesday, Oct. 22. And while the Cats had hopes for a higher seed, Rodriguez said they will make the best of being No. 4 in the eight-team regional bracket.

“It’s where we fit in this year,” he said. “Record-wise, it was hard to push for a higher seed as we played some pretty tough teams and we dropped some games we should have won. But we are excited to host our first game and hopefully look to make a run this year. We are slowly getting back to full strength and are playing better so we should be a very dangerous team to play against.”

The Wildcat’s were missing some people in their only game last week at Chippewa Falls, but after giving up an early goal scored five straight to even both their conference and BRC records at .500.

Gage Espanet had two goals and an assist and Owen Wise and Louis Olson had a goal and two assists each in the Cat’s come-from-behind win.

“It was a slow game for us,” Rodriguez said. “We gave up a goal right away but then didn’t look back after. We started to play faster and move the ball faster, but had some key players out for this game due to injury. But it was good to see some guys step up and make some things happen for us.”

The Wildcats will host La Crosse Central, who they defeated 8-0 earlier this season, in a regional semifinal Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. at Wildcat Field. But first they’ll wrap up the regular season this week with a pair of conference games at Eau Claire North Tuesday, Oct. 15, and home against Hudson Thursday, Oct. 17.
