Jerry Cognetta's impact on Wisconsin high school softball went beyond Elmwood's borders.
The former Elmwood teacher and coach helped change the state's perception and respect for prep softball, and his work has now been commended by state officials.
Wisconsin Sen. Tom Tiffany presented a legislative citation to Cognetta congratulating him on being inducted into the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame on Monday, April 15. The citation was presented to Cognetta on behalf of Rep. Warren Petryk and Tiffany.
"I certainly never expected this, but it is an honor and I appreciate those who took the time to present this award to me," Cognetta said. "I really enjoyed [Sen.] Tom's company and having the chance to visit with him again ... it was so much fun."
Cognetta taught and coached in Elmwood for nearly 20 years and recorded a career record of 301-39 during his days with the Raiders, but his impact goes beyond his teams' softball successes.
"I always knew softball and Elmwood were something special, but never did I imagine how good those people and experiences could make me feel after all these years," Cognetta said. "I'm just honored."
