Avery Johnson’s first-inning grand slam catapulted Hudson to a 10-2 victory in the first game and Grace O’Brien had as many hits at the plate as she allowed in the circle in a 14-2 win in the nightcap as the Raiders took a doubleheader from Rice Lake Thursday, May 2, at Grandview Park to remain undefeated in Big Rivers Conference play.
The pair of wins bumped Hudson to 8-0 in BRC play, 9-2 overall. Chippewa Falls is the only other undefeated team in the conference at 6-0. The Raiders and Cardinals will meet for a doubleheader in the conference finale Monday, May 13, at Grandview Park.
Johnson’s grand slam highlighted a five-run first inning in Thursday’s opener that gave the Raiders all the runs they would need in their 10-2 win. O’Brien hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Hannah Stich followed a two-run bomb in the fifth to extend Hudson’s lead to 10-1.
O’Brien added an RBI double in the victory and Paige Meyer stole four bases and scored twice while pitcher Sydney Gabriel struck out 13 and walked just one while allowing five hits and two earned runs.
Rice Lake jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap before the Raiders scored an unearned run in the second inning and took the lead for good with three runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run single from Gabby Sommers.
Meyer, Stich, Emily Juza and Anna Hinz each drove in a run in the fourth to extend Hudson’s lead to 8-1 and O’Brien had a two-run homer and Johnson hit an RBI sac fly in the fifth to make it an 11-2 game.
O’Brien’s fourth hit of the game-- a two-out double in the sixth-- drove in pinch runner Maddie Malmquist and Meyer and Stich followed with RBI singles to make the final 14-2.
O’Brien was 4-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI at the plate while allowing four hits and two earned runs and striking out four in the circle. Meyer also had four hits, two RBI, four stolen bases and four runs scored while Stich and Sommers had two hits and two RBI each.
