After opening postseason play with a 6-1 victory over Wausau East Tuesday, May 21, at home, the fifth-seeded Hudson softball team saw its playoff run come to an end with a 2-1, walk-off loss to No. 4 Wisconsin Rapids in a WIAA Division 1 regional semifinal Thursday, May 23, in Wisconsin Rapids.

Hudson's lone run came in the top of the first when Emily Juza drew a one-out walk and Paige Meyer followed with a single. Avery Johnson laced a ball to right field with two outs to score pinch-runner Abby Hockbein from second base, but Johnson was thrown out trying to advance to second on the throw home to end the inning.

The Raiders managed just three hits the rest of the way but pitcher Sydney Gabriel was able to keep Wisconsin Rapids off the board, including working out of a second and third situation with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, until Rapids sandwiched a pair of doubles around an error for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.

Johnson had two of Hudson's five hits while Gabriel struck out five with no walks while allowing seven hits and one earned run.

Two days earlier against 12th-seeded Wausau East, Hudson put four runs on the board in the first inning and Gabriel struck out 14 batters in six innings of work as the Raiders posted a 6-1 regional semifinal victory.

Hudson scored four runs in the first inning on three hits, an error and a hit by pitch before Meyer stroked a two-run home run into the wind in right field in the second to make it a 6-0 game.

Gabriel, meanwhile, allowed just one hit, a one-out double in the top of the fourth, while striking out 14 of the 19 batters she faced without a walk. Hannah Stich allowed an unearned run on two hits with two strikeouts in the seventh inning to make the final 6-1.

Gabby Sommers had a two-run single in the first and Stich and Johnson drove in a run apiece to give Hudson its 4-0 first-inning lead.

The Raiders finished the season with a record of 15-5.
