The Raider boys' tennis team ended the regular season on a high note with a pair of 7-0 wins over New Richmond and River Falls in a triangular match in New Richmond Thursday, May 16.
Head coach John Knutson said it was a great way to end the regular season.
"You always hope to peak at the end of the year and we are," he said. "Our singles lineup has been spectacular all year with senior captain Tyler Grosz standing at 22-2 on the year. His younger brother Jacob, our sophomore captain, has only lost one match this season and that was to Mark Pepperl of Memorial in the dual, but then he beat him recently in the BRC Tournament to take the BRC Championship at No. 2 singles."
Jacob Grosz's record stands at 24-1 and senior captain Luke Johnson is 20-5 while Kade Nickerson rounds out the singles lineup with a mark of 18-7.
"Our singles have done exceptionally well," Knutson said. "At the start of the season our doubles teams were really struggling, but near the end of the season, they have all come around nicely too getting some good wins as we head into the subsectional play this week."
The Raiders finished second in the BRC to Eau Claire Memorial with a 4-1 conference record, and an overall record of 17-6 on the season.
"Having lost six of our top 10 varsity players to graduation last year was a concern of mine going into this season, but our guys did an incredible job of stepping up and filling the positions," Knutson said. "Our top three singles guys, Tyler and Jacob Grosz, and Luke Johnson, had combined records of 66-8 on the year and we're hoping we can get those guys, and maybe a few more, to state in a couple weeks."
The Raiders took the first step towards state with Tyler and Jacob Grosz, Nickerson, and all three doubles teams-Jack Geurkink and Luke Johnson at No. 1, Brett Covey and Mitchell Drost at No 2, and Isaac Hennemann and Charlie Neuenschwander at No. 3-advancing through the subsectional in Eau Claire Monday, May 20, to the sectional round Wednesday, May 22, in Wisconsin Rapids.
