To start the season, Red Wing's volleyball team split its first four games — the two losses courtesy of the top two teams in the Big 9 Conference standings. Playing in their fifth game of the season on Saturday, the Wingers traveled to the third-place team in the conference pecking order. The result against Rochester Mayo was similar to the other two games against their conference-leading opponents — a 3-1 loss.

Red Wing lost the first set to Mayo, 25-16, but then rebounded to win the second set 25-18. Errors began to pile up for the Wingers in the third set however as they lost 25-13. The errors continued in the fourth set and Red Wing fell again 25-20.

Red Wing head volleyball coach Nikki Roschen said she was happy with the improvements the team made and competitiveness it showed against "a tough Mayo team." She said the unforced errors in the third and fourth sets were the difference between winning and losing.

Top individual performances for Red Wing included Abi Deming's team-high 13 kills. Bailie Roschen and Kennedy Knopp also added 10 and six kills, respectively. Hallie Roschen set up the offense with 28 assists. On defense, Bailie Roschen led the team with 22 digs, followed by Elle Brandt and Abi Deming with 13 digs apiece and Knopp with 11.

Red Wing, 2-3, next plays on Thursday when it travels to Rochester once again to take on John Marshall.
