East Ridge

The East Ridge wrestling team hosted a two-day tournament on Friday, Jan. 18 and Saturday, Jan. 19 with 20 other teams participating in the tournament.

The Raptors took fifth place as a whole, but battled the injury bug all weekend. The individual wrestlers had to wrestle a handful of matches in a short period of time.

That can do some damage on the body and it showed for East Ridge on the second day of the tournament. Tanner Holt, Royce Hogue, Roman Rogotzke and Marco Cavallaro all ended the weekend with medical forfeits.

"We did face a few injuries, but we'll focus on get them back to healthy wrestlers and give them some rest," said East Ridge's coach Matt Everson. "The section tournament is coming up soon and we need to be ready as a team."

Even though there were a few wrestlers out with injuries, the Raptors still placed sixth as a whole team with 128 points. That was one point away from fifth place and Mahtomedi.

Matt Hogue was the sole champion for the Raptors as he defeated Tyson Peitz from Waconia in the championship match at 106-pounds. East Ridge had two wrestlers earn second place.

"It's feels good to win this tournament. It's a big confidence boost," said Matt Hogue. "This is a good test for the section and state tournaments, so I feel ready for the second half of the season."

Hunter Lyden, the 138-pound wrestler, and Royce Hogue, the 145-pound wrestler, each fought to the championship match. They weren't able to come out with the victory in the championship, but Everson was happy with their fight over the two days.

The Rogotzke brothers, Roman and Ryder, each earned fourth place for their respective weight classes Cavallaro finished in sixth place, while Johnny LaCore ended the weekend with a seventh-place finish.

"This tournament is a good indicator to see where you are at as a wrestler for the second half of the season," Everson said. "We know what we need to work on as a team and as individuals and I'm excited to see what this next month has in store for us."

East Ridge will have the entire week to practice and return to full health before the Raptors travel to White Bear Lake at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25. East Ridge will wrestle Hastings and White Bear Lake.
