Senior Logan Hatch won the 138 pound title and sophomore Peter Hansen took second at 160 pounds at the Menomonie Sectional Saturday, Feb. 16, to qualify for next weekend’s WIAA Individual State Tournament in Madison.

Hatch defeated Tanner Kanable of Marshfield in the 138 pound title bout while Hansen lost to Carter Duerkop of Eau Claire North in the 160 pound final to advance as runner-up.

Hatch won a 13-9 decision over Cooper Behnke of Stevens Point in the opening round and defeated Demetrio Covarrubias 8-2 in the semifinals before earning a 14-10 decision over Kanable in the finals.

It will be the first state tournament appearance for Hatch, who suffered a season-ending back injury as a sophomore and lost his junior season to a broken leg. He takes a record of 36-6 into the state tournament this Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 21-23, at the Kohl Center in Madison.

He pinned Eric Grulke of Rhinelander in 2 minutes, 55 seconds in the first round and earned a 10-6 decision over Carson Trotzer of D.C. Everest in the semifinals before losing 13-7 to Duerkop in the finals.

Hudson’s Hank Gierke came up just short of a state bid after losing a wrestleback for second place at 182 pounds. He bounced back by pinning Andrew Schulz of Wisconsin Rapids in 3:43 in the third place match before losing to Sam Skillings of Menomonie in the second place wrestleback.
