MAIDEN ROCK - A 14-year-old Red Wing boy died Sunday of a gunshot wound that occurred while hunting in rural Maiden Rock, according to Pierce County authorities.

Maiden Rock, Lund and Ellsworth ambulance services were dispatched at 2:10 p.m. to N887 385th St., a tract of land just south of County Road A along Highway 35, to a report of an injured hunter. Other hunting party members led first-responders to Logan Hinrichs, who was dead at the scene.

A sheriff's investigator and the medical examiner were called. Subsequent investigation indicates the boy took his own life, according to Chief Deputy Jason Matthys.

Hinrichs was an eighth-grader at Red Wing High School. Supt. Karsten Anderson sent out an alert Monday morning saying the district was implementing its crisis management plan including counselors "to provide as much support as possible during this difficult time."

The 8-acre parcel of land is owned by Delano Hinrichs of Maiden Rock, according to Pierce County land records. Dave Hausman, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources warden supervisor for the region, said wardens from St. Croix and Pepin counties also responded.

Wisconsin concluded a four-day firearm antlerless deer hunt Sunday.
