Led by three first-place finishes, Red Wing tied with New Prague for third Tuesday at the Missota Conference Relay Meet. The Wingers and the Trojans each scored 135 points.

"I'm pretty proud of all the boys," Red Wing coach Adam Nelson said. "Everyone did a great job in pretty much every event. They did a lot better than I expected."

A year ago Red Wing finished seventh out of eight teams at the same meet. Nelson credited the athletes' hard work and his event-specific assistant coaches for the improvement.

Red Wing won both of the throwing relays and it was the same three individuals in both events. Luke Johnson, Kaleb Cushing and Hoka Janis combined to throw 141 feet, 1 1/2 inches in the shot put and 384-11 in the discus.

The Wingers' other victory came in the 4x1,600-meter relay. Bryant Blahnik, Aden Winn, Jordy Hassemer and Christian Leitner posted a time of 19 minutes, 0.20 seconds.

Blahnik, Nate Sievers, Winn and Leitner combined to finish second in the distance medley. They finished in 11:20.44. The event was comprised of legs of 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meters.

Red Wing also took second in the short sprint medley (100, 100, 200 and 400 meters). The team was comprised of Tom Rother, Ethan Draz, Alex Harder and Andy Gehn. They finished in 1:40.36.

Host Shakopee won with 189 points and Chanhassen accumulated 162 points.

Red Wing is back in action Thursday when it plays host to a relay meet at the high school.
